about

While researching the name for the first tune, I obtained five different titles. Not being too sure which one was correct, I decided in the end to opt for the name by which I know it best. On account of the high C in the second part, I Christened it “The Fiddler’s Nightmare.”

I was later informed by Mr. Paddy Ryan from Roscommon, that the correct title for this reel is The Little House on the Hill.

The second reel is a very close relation to “The Mountain Rose” which can be found in the O’Neill Collection. It was a great favourite of “The Lough Gabhna” Céilí Band, of which the great Co. Clare box player, Tony McMahon, was a member.

Maureen and I are joined on this track by my good friend Michael Murphy, from Doolin, Co. Clare, where he proves beyond doubt that a pair of spoons in the right hands can provide very subtle accompaniment.

Recorded June 1994.
