about

Of the many stories and songs that have been written lamenting the curse of emigration, this is my favourite, as it gives a positive picture as to what lies in store for our emigrants:

So pack up your seastores – consider no longer
Ten dollars a week isn’t very bad pay
With no taxes or tithes to devout up your wages
When you’re on the green fields of America

It comes from the repertoire of Paddy Tunney – a giant in the field of traditional singing. He got it from his mother. He added three more verses to it as what he obtained from her was incomplete. While attending a festival in Killygordon, Co. Donegal, to commemorate the fiddler Hugh Gillespie.

I heard it sung for the first time by one of our great traditional singers, Rita Gallagher. Séamus MacMathúna, another fine exponent of this song, sang it with passion and conviction as he does with all songs of this nature. This track is a shortened version of the song, combining verse and chorus.

Recorded May 1997.
